Job Description 

The Railway Civil Engineer will be responsible for the Production of feasibility, preliminary and detailed designs and calculations within an implementation project, or renewals or upgrades from other Railway asset renewals. He will also be responsible for mentoring junior designers and review designs produced by them under your mentorship. On other projects the infrastructure specialist will also have the opportunity of overall design coordination on Multi-disciplinary project that require the fill integration of specialist railway design to satisfy the overall project requirements.
The role is part of the Railway team, working on an extremely wide variety of small and very prestigious projects. The infrastructure specialist will also be responsible in providing railway design capability to other projects and to provide good civil engineering skills and technical knowledge of railway design and operations, within an environment of high quality and timeliness.

The Infrastructure Specialist is responsible for the production of detailed railway designs and calculations within an implementation project, renewals, or track amendments resultant from other Railway asset renewals.

Able to work under nominal supervision for the majority of the work.
Also responsible for detailed railway design input and calculations to multidisciplinary design teams on small to medium sized projects.
Work content includes producing: preliminary and detailed railway layouts; technical studies and reports; generation and evaluation of technical design options; design calculations and analysis; specialized report writing and interfacing with other disciplines.
Work may also include concept layout design and outline specification.
Will provide design office cover for Commissioning activities as required.

Person Specification

Good Civil Engineering Degree (B.Eng, M.Eng or equivalent) recognised by an appropriate Professional Body.
Any other post graduate achievements (Diploma, PhD, etc) would be an advantage.
Ideally, a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and a Chartered Engineer.
Will have had maintenance, renewal, and/or enhancements experience in a railway infrastructure company, major consultant, or major contractor, with the majority of this being spent on railway and/or civil engineering design.
Significant hands-on experience of the production of feasibility, outline and detailed railway (alignment, track, civil engineering structures, drainage, formation, operations, etc) designs and calculations.
Graduate Engineer with a number years experience and having completed the Formal Training agreement objectives set by the Professional Institution. About to or recently achieved chartered status.
Good Experience in the use of design software packages (MicroStation, InRail, TerraModelling, ClearRoute, etc) will be necessary. Experience of other software tools (Project Programming, word processor, Spreadsheets, etc) would be a benefit.

Able to work under nominal supervision for the majority of the work, and supervise more junior staff.
Good underpinning knowledge of railway, civil engineering, geotechnical and structural engineering design principles, standards, components, and fabrication methods is essential.
Good knowledge of route alignment, drainage, signaling layout, formation and structural principles and design would be a benefit.
Appreciation of the key interactions between railway assets and systems and of railway operating practices.
Experience of railway and civil engineering construction methods and installation.
Competent in providing project documentation to Client requirements.
Basic management responsibilities for some activities within a small team or project.
Knowledge of commercial risk, capital costs, operation & maintenance costs and contracts.
